Employees lend development expertise to kids’ coding camp

In 2018, approximately 10 employees from the Vizient® Cape Girardeau office chose skills-based volunteering instead of their annual team-building exercise, leveraging their applications development expertise to volunteer with the as part of a six-week youth coding camp. An overwhelming success for the 148 elementary school participants, the program addressed the need for future developers in the area, enhanced the academic success of at-risk youth and prepared participants for the digital workplace of the future. The experience proved a team-building one for Cape Girardeau employees after all, as they bonded over sharing their specialized skills and talents to strengthen their community, as well as learning ways to expand their capacity for collaboration to successfully achieve organizational goals.

Vizient also helped the Marquette Technology Institute expand its Youth Coding League program, which trains middle schoolers on Google’s CS First curriculum, to the entire Cape Girardeau school district through a financial grant. Our employees also served as volunteers during the Youth Coding League’s team competition. The program was available at no cost to schools or the students due to grants, including one from Vizient.
